How to Save Money on Gas

Why Saving Money on Gas Matters

No matter what the Jackass in Chief says on Fox Never Been News, gas prices in the US are significantly higher than two years ago. As of April 2026, the national average gas price is approximately $4.11 per gallon, which is a 29.5% increase from $3.17 a year ago and much higher than prices two years prior.

How to Save Money on Gas

There are several simple, basic things you can do to save money on gas without going to extremes. Only use premium fuel if your vehichle demands it. Keep your tires properly inflated. Improperly inflated tires can actually cut into your gas mileage. Driving the speed limit and at steady speeds also stretches that gas mileage. Below are some other ways to save.

Check out free loyalty programs

Some gas stations and grocery stores have loyalty programs that give you discounts at the pump for buying stuff you buy anyway. Don't defeat the purpose of saving by paying for any. With the ones worth having all you do is make purchases as you normally would (on groceries, gas, or convenience store items) to get a discount per gallon. Also, just shop around. Have a Costco membership? Their gas is usually cheaper. Learn more about the benefits of Costco gas here.

Trip Chain

That just means stop running in and out so much. Combine errands like stopping by the grocery store on your way home from work, or running to the post office after you drop off the kids at school or soccer practice. Make lists before you go shopping to ensure you get everything you need in one trip. The fewer trips you make running errands, the less you’ll pay in gas. Those small savings add up.

Carpool and Rideshare

Back to the good ol' days and the carpool lane. Get together with some coworkers and switch up who drives everybody to work this week. That's a win/win because you don't have to drive your car for several weeks and that's about 4 or 5 less vehicles on the road clogging up the highways and polluting the environment. Could one parent swing by and pick up three or four of the neighbourhood kids heading to soccer practice? Bet they could.

Public Transportation

If a bus is an option in your area, a bus pass or fare is gonna cost you way less than gas. Consider it.

Stay the Hell Home

Do you have to go to the movies this weekend or could you pop some popcorn, get cozy on the couch and stream something, preferably free? Bet you could. Delivery, even with fees, might now be more cost effective than going to pick everything up. Compare.

Go Old School

Wanna get extreme with it? Do what I do. Walk. Granted, my situation is not 100% by choice but that's not your problem. Walk or bike to anything close enough if you're fortunate enough to be healthy enough and have close options.

Learn How to Fucking Vote

Stop voting for republicans who always, always, always screw the economy. Drag people to the polls with you if you ever get a chance to vote again. Stop the current madness from happening again if you have the chance.
