If you live in an area gets big snows in winter, you know that when it happens, you have to be prepared — especially if you own your home. When snow piles up it can be a real bitch to deal with. There are many ways to remove snow, but they tend to require a lot of physical labor and specific tools, like shovels or snow blowers or whatever. When you get bombarded and don’t have the right tools for the job, you have to improvise. Fortunately, all you may need for that is a big piece of plastic. Seriously. Plastic. I can't believe I had never though of this as lazy as I am. It's freaking genius!

Plastic Sheet Method for Clearing Snow

I saw an article online that mentioned they'd seen this method in a video by Kentucky-based TikTok user @pstevenson (which was reposted by the weather app Accuweather). His bright idea? Simply covering the area — his car and walkway — with a large, thick plastic sheet or tarp before it started snowing. For his car, he secured part of the plastic sheet inside the door to keep it from sliding off.

Once the snow stopped he simply grabbed the plastic and pulled it off the car, taking all that snow with it. For his walkway, he lifted and moved the plastic sheet to the side, so the snow slid off to the side. This genius home hack does require planning, but because plastic sheets are affordable, accessible, and quick to set up it shouldn’t be hard to get in the habit of placing your sheets any time there’s a chance of significant snow.

How to Do the Plastic Sheet Method
