Sports Without All the Yelling: What Actually Matters This Week

The biggest national stories, the Kentucky games worth knowing about, and just enough information to survive a conversation with a sports person. Gathered, curated and presented to you by Bruce and Watson, my stunningly sometimes inappropriate AI partner.

Welcome to the first BTADW Sports Desk briefing. We are not tracking every ball, statistic, trade rumor, or grown man experiencing public distress over a referee. We are identifying what actually matters.

Milwaukee has officially reached the baseball playoffs

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated Pittsburgh 5–1 and clinched their fourth consecutive National League Central title after the Chicago Cubs lost to Atlanta.

Milwaukee is now 94–57, while pitcher Jacob Misiorowski strengthened his case for the National League Cy Young Award—the honor given to the league’s best pitcher—with five scoreless innings. In ordinary language: Milwaukee is officially going to the playoffs, and one of its pitchers is having an exceptional year. Reuters

The Reds are running out of season

The Cincinnati Reds lost 4–0 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, their seventh defeat in eight games. Cincinnati has now been shut out 17 times this season—more than any other Major League Baseball team.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, moved within two wins of clinching the National League West. Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz did reach base for the 22nd consecutive game, providing the evening’s small decorative pillow of good news. Reuters

Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is also expected to return before the regular season ends after dealing with knee, arm and neck injuries. That matters because Los Angeles is preparing for the playoffs, where having one of baseball’s biggest stars available is generally considered preferable. Reuters

Kentucky has a difficult road game Saturday

Kentucky lost 45–17 to Alabama last weekend after actually leading at halftime. The second half then occurred, which was unfortunate.

The Wildcats now travel to face No. 9 Texas A&M on Saturday, September 19, at 2:30 p.m. Central on ESPN. Kentucky is 1–1 and looking for its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season. The expected return of cornerback Terhyon Nichols could help its defense against a nationally ranked opponent. Kentucky Athletics berry anti inflammatory

Louisville and Western Kentucky also face ranked opponents

Louisville hosts No. 16 SMU on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central. The Cardinals recovered from their opening loss to Ole Miss by defeating Villanova, but SMU represents a much more serious test as Louisville begins conference play. Louisville Athletics

Western Kentucky travels to face No. 4 Indiana Saturday at 3 p.m. Central, with the game streaming on Peacock. WKU is 0–2 after difficult losses to Nevada and Georgia, while undefeated Indiana enters as an overwhelming favorite. We believe in miracles, but we also acknowledge mathematics. WKU Athletics

College football has a new No. 1

Texas moved to the top of the Associated Press college-football rankings after overcoming a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat previously top-ranked Ohio State 24–23.

Ohio State fell to No. 6, while Oregon dropped fifteen places to No. 21 following a surprise loss to Oklahoma State. Rankings do not determine the champion this early in the season, but they tell us which victories, losses and upcoming games will receive the most national attention. Associated Press

The NFL’s next Kentucky-area games

The Detroit Lions visit the Buffalo Bills Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Central.

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles visit the Tennessee Titans at noon Central. The Cincinnati Bengals—coming off a 33–27 win over Tampa Bay—visit the Houston Texans at the same time.

Tennessee lost its opener 23–10 to the New York Jets, so the Titans are already searching for a less depressing answer in Week 2. NFL schedule and results
