When it comes to exigent matters of maternal health, Trump and his Republicans have forced doctors to prioritize themselves over patients.
Take Texas. Due to strict abortion laws in that state, doctors are terrified of losing their licenses, paying extortionate fines, and going to prison for 99 years if they help women who are miscarrying and bleeding out. Women in desperate need of urgent medical care are being insufficiently treated or turned away.
The threat of prosecution has instilled such fear in doctors and nurses that hospitals now require physicians to consult with staff attorneys when treating complicated pregnancies — including miscarriages. Texas abortion laws include a particularly peculiar and outrageous method of enforcement – deputizing citizens to sue people for aiding or abetting an abortion, and rewarding successful lawsuits with a $10,000 bounty. (Yes, a bounty.)
I love it! Bluesky writers are the best!
