Two of my favorite independent sources of news and information are ProPublica and MeidasTouch News. Free, as it should be. They do ask for and accept donations and I encourage those who can to please contribute. Meidas also offers premium subscription packages for additional content.

ProPublica does fearless investigative journalism and uncovers the dirt on some powerful entities. I greatly admire their courage and determination to expose truth. Check them out.

MeidasTouch News focuses almost entirely on politics with a liberal leaning slant which is desperately needed in this age of endless right wing propaganda being spewed everywhere online and off. They do a great job of exposing right wing and republican hypocrisy and corruption. Check them out.
